Golden Plover ~ St Davids

Spent some time today looking for GlossyIbis around St David’s. I failed on that but between Crug Glass and Berea was the most amazing flock of Golden plover. As best as I could count about 5K. Wheeling around in flocks and wedge shaped groups – brilliant. Many split of and went north – however many landed and as so many of them immediately put their heads under their wings and went to sleep they were maybe new arrivals. Plenty of Lapwing present as well.

llanelli WWT in January

A visit to the WWT reserve a couple of days ago was a very nice day out. Although Carmarthenshire was very foggy by dinner time (Quiche salad and chips – very nice) the sun had ‘done its job’ Nice views of over wintering Blackwits and birds simply enjoying the warm sun and afternoon.

Swans and Owls

Today was a chance to get out without being blown away or feel like you are standing under a hose pipe. Lovely birds to see in Pembrokeshire at this time of year are Whooper swans and Short eared owls. These being near St Nicholas and on the St David’s airfield respectively.

The start of 2012

Out at last in very stormy and changeable weather, the highlight of the day being a Greenland white fronted Goose on Penberry pond nr St Davids. A nice bird for Pembrokeshire at the start of the year. Also present Mallard, Teal, Wigeon, Teal and Canada Geese.
