Seal13 'Pup' now 29 days old and now has its first water proof coat. This was to be the last day we saw 'pup' as during the following night it left us to pursue a life in the great unknown. Like many young in the Natural World it now has to navigate, find and recognise food, recognise and avoid predators. Again I would say how fantastic the Skippers and crew were in educating and keeping everyone at a respectable distance from it. So our story of Pup ends. Did we ever see it again - who knows

Seal 11. At 21 days Pup has survived the storm, the moult in to its first waterproof coat is well under way. Mum and the Bull Seal are no where to be seen. Pup is now alone, unusually there was only one birth on this beach, it is wheened, and, will have to survive on its fat reserves until hunger drives it to go and search for food for itself. ( More to follow on the life of 'our pup - also please note these Photos and the story are from Autumn 2008)

Seal 10. At 18+21days Mum is still with 'Pup' who was slow at putting on weight initially but, she is showing more interest in Mr Seal than 'Pup'. By now Pup is a class 4 Seal with the grey of the waterproof undercoat showing through. At 21 days the biggest test yet. High tides and storms we feared 'pup' might be dashed against the Harbour wall. ( More to follow on the life of 'our pup - also please note these Photos and the story are from Autumn 2008)

The kerb edges have not been sprayed and with no traffic or people about early this morning some of our local House sparrows could enjoy a safe and peaceful breakfast in our Street.

Seal 8+9. Pup is now 15 days old. Life is good. Mum still feeding it, lots of swimming lessons. However Mr Seal is becoming very persistent in his desire to mate. At the moment Mum is still protecting Pup ( More to follow on the life of 'our pup - also please note these Photos and the story are from Autumn 2008)

Seal 7 'Pup' is now gaining weight and as confidence and strength grow Mum takes it for those all important swimming lessons. These skills will soon be needed if it is to survive. Please note all of the photos in this series were taken from distance with tele photo lenses. ( More to follow on the life of 'our pup - these Photos and the story are from Autumn 2008)

Seal 6 'Pup' is now 7 days old - thanks to a good supply of Mums very fat rich milk weight gain is rapid. Every day the shape changes as it grows. By now when not sleeping is very vocal, the calls are often mistaken for Human cries for help and many times the Coast Guard and Lifeboat have been called out to the call of a Seal pup. Now a Class 2 seal - Outline smoother, coat whiter, neck still defined, no folds in the skin. ( More to follow on the life of 'our pup - also please note these Photos and the story are from Autumn 2008)

Seal 5. This pup was born at St Justinian's where people congregate for boat trips. We could see it develop every day. The boat skippers and crew did a fantastic job in talking to people and keeping it safe. . Seal pups are categorised depending their development - Class1 is up to 6 days old and is described as Body contour thin, neck well defined, skin in loose folds around the body, coat may be yellow. Shown is the same pup at 3 and at 4 days old showing no sign of the umbilical cord. They sort of resemble a large bag with not a lot inside it More to follow on the life of what is now 'our pup'

Seal 4 When a female returns to the 'pupping' beaches the dominant male or Beachmaster shows no mercy when letting her know who is in charge Things are not always tickity boo between the ladies either - often blood is drawn.

Seals 3 - A newly born pup - I missed the birth by minutes - showing the important instinct of mother and calf bonding by calling and waving to Mum who is doing the same in response. This early bonding and recognition has to be made from birth and during the first few days.

A Bull Seal showing typical aggression when on land - best to keep well away from those gnashers !! Atlantic Grey seals are very large - males up to 3m in length and 400Kg in weight - females 2m and 250 Kg PS - Photo taken from a distance with a tele photo lens - note also they can cover ground quicker than most of us !!

This really shows the difference between an adult dominant male and a female Atlantic grey seal. A Skipper who I have been on many brilliant boat trips with told me I always 'have' to say how much prettier the girl seals are than the boy seals.
