Northumberland
Just back from a trip to Northumberland – many thanks to Alan ( Hawkeshead photography)and Andrew (Serenty boat Trips) for their arrangements. A trip to the Outer Farne from Seahouses was brill – lots of Seals, Scoter, GNDivers, RTDivers, Waders, etc etc.
How many other people can say they have managed to ‘Head Butt’ the Outer Farne – not once but twice within an hour of landing!!
Also managed to see lots of birds in other locations, Eiders in the surf, wonderful Bullfinches etc the list goes on.
Brilliant scenery, St Abbs, Eyemouth, snow on the Cheviots and two more lifeboat Stations ticked and added to my life list – yes, very sad I know

Isabelline Wheatear
A visit today to Wooltack point Pembrokeshire to look for ‘the Wheatear’ and for once I did not miss out.
This is only the second recorded sighting in Pembrokeshire and the first on the Pembrokeshire mainland. Only the fifth for Wales – a real desert bird and here right on our ‘doorsteps’. Not only that it has been here for nine days so far!!

Pelagic 22 August 2013
A joint trip with the Mid Pembs and Bird Group Sections of the wildlife Trust on Celtic wildcat from Neyland turned out to be an excellent day for those on board. Both the weather and wildlife were kind to us.
Not far off shore we came across many pods of Common Dolphin (200+) lots of feeding groups of Manx Shearwaters, Auks, Fulmars. Storm petrel. Great Skua etc.
A Risso’s Dolphin showed really well as did the gannets on Grassholm with chicks of all ages. Seals were numerous and we found a third cetacean in the form of a group of Porpoise.
Thanks to skipper Nick, Robin, and to everyone who came on the trip

18 August Pembrey
Sunday the 18August at Pembrey race circuit saw racing cars from as early as 1911 to 1959. How wonderful to see, hear and smell these cars being raced instead of standing idle in Museums. Shown are Vauhahall, Lotus. Bugatti’s and an Alfa Romeo

Boat trip on Celtic Wildcat 23rdJuly13
Wildlife Trust Sections - Mid pembs and pembs Bird group
We were so lucky with the weather’ by chance the day before the long hot spell changed. Sailing from Neyland we were a full boat on Celtic Wildcat. The three Islands of Skomer, Skokholm and Grassholm were all looked at during the day. Large numbers of Puffins, other Auks, Kittiwakes etc present. Around the Lighthouse (Skokholm) both Chough and Peregrine Falcon were spotted. The Grassholm Gannet colony was – to say the least – very active. Seals were noted and further out to sea two pods of common Dolphin, Porpoise, Manx Shearwaters and Storm petrel as well as many hundreds of birds feeding round a Trawler. Thanks to Robin for organising the day to our skipper Nick and to everyone on the trip for making the day so nice.

A trip to grassholm with Voyages of Discovery
We had no wind, as calm as it could be, blue skies, blue sea – lots of sea birds including Puffins, Pufflings, Jumplings, Storm petrel and of course the Gannets of Grassholm. Also a pod of about 7/8 Risso’s Dolphins including at least one maybe two calves. They did not show any interest in coming to the boat so we enjoyed their company from a respectable distance.

Racing cars
Yesterday was the Vintage Sports car Club hill climb at Shelsley Walsh near Worcester. Very hot long drive but great day out.
With the high temperatures, pollen and grass seed I fully understand why I now prefer Pembrokeshire to Worcestershire.
Shown is the mighty 24 Litre Napier Bentley built in 1929 (left) and an ERA built in 1938

If only I knew more about his subject – the ‘doors he opened’ were amazing. Thanks Sid and also for the blue skies and seas you arranged for us.
Regular Geology days are planned throughout the summer – keep in touch with Thousand islands Wildlife Expeditions for more info.
